Child Care Facility
The Summerfield Residential Child Care Facility is located in North Central Clarendon in the district of Summerfield near Chapleton.
The facility began operation in 1976 with 16 boys. The home now accommodates thirty-two (32) girls between the ages of thirteen to eighteen years of age who have been made wards of the State deemed to be in need of Care and Protection.
The Summerfield Residential Child Care Facility is owned and managed by the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (formerly CDA) which an Executive Agency of the Government of Jamaica.
All the girls are enrolled in school. The girls interact with members of the community and attend church and related activities.
The girls maintain contact with family members through telephones, letters and home visits. Efforts are made to reintegrate the girls with their families once they are willing and able to receive them.
There is a Computer Lab and the girls are exposed to Information Technology classes and utilize this to assist with their studies.
The facility is served by staff consisting of a manager, assistant manager, social workers and other caregivers who ensure that the needs of the children are met.
The objective of the facility is to provide the environment to enhance the growth and development of the girls so that they can realize their full potential and contribute to nation-building.
Educational Achievements
1. All the girls who have matriculated to fifth form have attained five or more CSEC and matriculate into tertiary level studies at all major Universities and colleges. They are studying Social Work, Logistic Management, Drama, Allied Health Care, Education, etc.
2. The present Head Girl at Claude McKay High School is from is a resident here.
3. The 2018-2019 Valedictorian at Clarendon College was a resident at the facility.
4. We have seven ladies preparing for five or more CSEC exams in the 2019/2020 sitting.
5. We have children who are representing their school in track and field, All Together Sing Competition, vice president of the student council body among others.
